Certificates, such as Organic, Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance are an effective way to recognize whether your coffee cup is sustainable. We will explain these certificates below.

With certified coffees, Paulig can promote sustainable development as well as the well-being of coffee farmers. Farmers receive information on good and sustainable practices from the certification systems and the systems may support them in adopting more efficient production methods. At best, this can lead to an increase in productivity and cost-efficiency which enhances the livelihoods of the farmers. Certified coffee is more expensive, which means that the farmers will receive additional income.

So, even if there is no certificate on the coffee package, that doesn’t mean that the coffee couldn’t be sustainably produced and sourced. That’s why it’s worth getting to know the coffee’s manufacturer and the sustainability principles that the manufacturer has in the sourcing and production of coffee. At Paulig, we are committed to all of our coffee coming from verified sustainable sources. Fairtrade and Organic are the most significant certifications used at Paulig. Approximately four fifths of Paulig coffee is currently certified and one fifth is sourced through our partnership programs, which are verified sustainable.

What do the certificates mean?

It’s good to remember that all sustainability certificates have their own emphases. That’s why it’s good to think of the things you value the most and also get to know the emphasis and principles of the certificates. It is also worth getting to know the product manufacturer’s principles and ways of taking care of matters related, for example, to the environment and social responsibility.

Organic or organically farmed

Organic coffee is made of organically farmed coffee beans. The principle is to produce products that doesn’t have production methods that are harmful to nature or the health and well-being of humans, plants or animals. For instance, the amount of allowed additives and auxiliary substances in organic farming has been limited to the bare necessities. In Finland, the production and marketing of organic products is supervised by the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira, Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health Valvira, the municipalities and Customs.

The Organic certificate is always combined with the Fairtrade certificate in Paulig’s coffees, which means that in addition to the environmental responsibility, social responsibility is also taken into consideration. Our selection includes, for example, Juhla Mokka Organic and Paulig Mundo.

Fairtrade

The international criteria for Fairtrade have been complied with in the production of the raw material, and the production is on a socially, economically and ecologically sustainable foundation. A minimum price is paid to the farmer for Fairtrade products that covers the necessary costs of production that is sustainable for the environment and people. In addition to the minimum price, a Fairtrade addition is paid. It is meant for projects that develop the entire community. The entire system has been created to improve the status of smallholder farmers and their workers in developing countries in the international trade. Further reading: www.fairtrade.net/
